All new hires must participate in the urban teacher perceiver developed by the gallup corporation. this instrument evaluates the candidates' talents along the following themes: commitment, dedication, individualized perception, caring, involver, empathy, positivity, initiator, stimulator, input, and concept. the staffing specialists have found the instrument to be an asset in hiring the best possible candidates for the milwaukee public schools. to address the substitute staffing needs, qualified candidates were invited to attend an orientation meeting on october 14, 1999. to expedite the hiring process, an automated telephone version of the urban teacher perceiver is administered to screen candidates. currently, 690 substitute teachers are available, with an anticipated hiring of approximately 45 additional individuals. the staffing task force continues to meet on a monthly basis with representatives from central services, schools, colleges, universities, alternative certification programs, and the department of public instruction to develop strategies for the successful recruitment, selection, and retention of teachers. classified staffing the office of classified staffing is responsible for all of the human resource activities associated with approximately 6, 000 support positions within the school district. the human resource activities include conducting all of the district's criminal background checks including volunteers and partnership schools ; , processing pre-employment physical examinations, re-staffing schools each school year, staffing summer school, processing requests for leaves of absence and transfer, implementing changes in status such as promotions and changes in work year hours, processing grievances at the second step, and processing disciplinary actions. the support positions under the jurisdiction of the office of classified staffing include such classifications as secretary, educational assistant, food service worker, building service worker, school engineer, building trades carpenter, electrician, sheet metal worker ; , handicapped children's assistant, accountant, truck driver, and safety assistant. a sampling of the some of the activities of the office of classified staffing for the four- 4- ; month period from july 1, 1999, through october 31, 1999, is as follows: 2, 719 wisconsin criminal background checks 167 non-wisconsin criminal background checks 311 new hires 187 leaves of absence processed 18 grievances processed 247 transfers promotions reassignments processed 162 retirements resignations processed 40 excessed educational assistants, and 15 positive drug screens.
